Alpha is Coming To Fellside

You may have heard of the Alpha Course, or seen ads on the back of buses, but if you haven’t, it’s a 10 week course, with no strings attached, talking and discussing on a range of very important topics such as ‘why are we here?’ ‘why is there suffering in the world?’ ‘is there a God?’ etc. It’s very much a discussion, with nobody giving the hard sell, and each week on Wednesday evenings, beginning on October 6th, we’ll start with a meal together. There is no obligation to complete the course, and if you wanted to leave at any time, you are free to do so.

Alpha courses started in London about 20 years ago, and have been conducted in churches all over the world. Celebrities and politicians have been course members, and Alpha is held in very high regard.

We would love to see you in October. There is no charge for the course, just a donation towards the food if you wish to. There are many people with lots of questions they would like to find answers to, but have no idea where to search for those answers. If this is you, why not give Alpha a try? Mark the date in your diary: Wednesday October 6th, and watch for more details in this newsletter.

Come On, England!

The world cup is nearly here, and we’re dusting off the flags, shirts and banners! If you fancy watching the games on a big screen, but don’t want to fight your way into a pub, or you’d like the kids to come too, Fellside have the answer! We’re getting a licence to show ALL the England games, and hopefully the semi finals and final as well, on a big screen with refreshments in our WORLD CUP CAFÉ. Join us yelling our heads off, it’s free to come in, all you’ll need is some small change for the refreshments. Here are the fixture dates:

Saturday June 12th @ 7.30pm : England v USA
Friday June 18th @ 7.30pm : England v Algeria
Wednesday June23rd @ 3.00pm : England v Slovenia

If England make it beyond this stage (if???), we’ll hopefully show their quarter final, semi final, and final (we’re true fans!) and the dates for those are:

Friday July 2nd @ 3.00pm, 7.30pm : Quarter Finals
Saturday July 3rd @ 3.00pm, 7.30pm : Quarter Finals
Tuesday July 6th @ 7.30pm : Semi Final
Wednesday July 7th @ 7.30pm : Semi Final
Sunday July 11th @ 7.30pm : Final

See you there!

We would welcome anyone who would like to join us.

If you would like more information ask any of these ladies for their thoughts about the group and/or details of the next meeting.

This is a unique opportunity for us to show our love to the people of Whickham, meet new people and build relationships. So please join us as we seek to serve the Lord as His community in our community.

All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you.

The Lent for Everyone

The Lent for Everyone books are now available. We are asking for a £4 donation per book which can either be handed to me or put on the plate in an envelope
identifying it as such. If there is any surplus over and above the cost of the books this will go to the Kosova Gift.

Mothering Sunday - March 14th

Mothering Sunday - March 14th
Last Mothering Sunday we made a special collection and this was sent to SMILE International to be used for their sponsored widow programme in Kosova. These ladies, all widowed as a result of the war in that country, struggle as mothers to support their families and the money we raised gave them a day in the SMILE centre with good food, a chance to relax and talk, and a gift to take home. We are intending to do the same this year, so this is an advanced notice. If people would like to make a donation in thanks for, or in memory of their mother or someone who has been a mother to them then please bring that donation to Church on Mothering Sunday. There will be a small tree in the vestibule and flowers to hang on the tree in recognitionof our mothers.

Albert Frokku Update

Albert Frokku Update
Bertie’s December news letter is now available in the church foyer. More recent news is that Bertie has been appointed as Coordinator for the Smile
work for Kosova. This will make him financially secure but Bertie was keen to pass on the message that without the support of Fellside he would not
have been able to start the work in Rahovec. This is still going to continue and Bertie is looking forward to continuing the work in partnership with Fellside Church.

Knitting for Kosova

Knitting for Kosova
The lorry containing shoeboxes and also our blankets arrived safely in Kosova just before Christmas and there is a picture on the board of Jean with
all the boxes of blankets in the temporary warehouse. After all the shoeboxes had been delivered priority then would be to get the blankets transported
to the Smile centre and distributed. There is a huge number of boxes of blankets but the message was that they could never have enough! Thank
you to all those people who are continuing knitting and also for those people buying up wool from charity shops. Another possibility ( and good for recycling!) would be to unpick, wash and reuse any good quality hand knitted garments. If you have anything like this please leave the garment in the vestibule. All the Smile shoeboxes contained a hat, gloves and scarf ( again -see picture on the notice board) and it may be that some people might like to turn their hand to knitting some of these for a change.( squares are still required!) There is pattern on the board and also an example of the finished
garments. Please help yourself to a pattern if you would like one, or use one or your own. Thank you again for all you are doing and please pass on these thanks to any other knitters you know.

Membership

Membership
Are you interested in becoming a member of Fellside Methodist Church, or want to find out more about what membership means? We will be running
membership preparation sessions soon, so if you are interested please have a word with Paul or Liz.

Property Matters

Property Matters
The property committee have decided to bring back the system of reporting any faults via a book which will be placed on the table in the vestibule (the
book is silver so hopefully you won't miss it). If you find anything wrong with the premises, however large or small please put this in the book which will
be checked regularly. If it is urgent or the task can be completed easily we will endeavour to do this immediately. If it is a larger task it wil be taken to
the next property committee meeting and the task will be allocated. We will be meeting every 2 months so hopefully it will not be too long before it is repaired.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help with the painting - The committee has decided that this should take place in the spring, when the
weather is better - so I will be in touch nearer to the time.

Finally it would be helpful if we had a few volunteers would could be available during the week to let tradesmen into the premises. This should not
happen very often but if you are able to help out on an occasional basis please give your name to Christine Graham.

Outreach Meeting

Outreach Meeting
A reminder to all those on the Outreach group that our next meeting is on
Monday February 8th at 7.30 at Liz's.

This group consists of people with a heart for reaching out into our community and working with, and supporting Liz and our 2 Stewards for Outreach,
Simon and Jean, in planning ways in which we as a Church can do this. If anyone feels they would like to be part of the group then why not speak to
Simon or Jean to find out more. The group tries to meet regularly but for not more than one hour.

Saturday 9 January 2010

The preaching from January until Lent 2010

The preaching from January until Lent 2010 will be based on The Healthy Churches Handbook by Robert Warren. Copies of the book have been purchased and each Steward will be reading it over the next couple of weeks. Books will then be made available to housegroup leaders along with suitable group material for use in fellowship groups. For Lent, we will be following The Big Read teaching on Luke's gospel- material by Bishop Tom Wright. It's going to be an exciting time: don't miss out!

Outreach Meeting - Wednesday January 13th 7.30 at Liz's- 29 Orchard Road

Outreach Meeting - Wednesday January 13th 7.30 at Liz's- 29 Orchard Road

A reminder to all those on the Outreach group that our next meeting is this Wednesday at 7.30. Please come with your thoughts about Christmas - things that went well and things we could have done differently. Also any ideas for the coming months up to and including Easter.

( If anyone would like to be part of our Outreach planning at Fellside, then why not speak to either Liz, Jean or Simon and come along to the meeting this week)

Table Top Sale

Table Top Sale
If you, or someone you know, had been saving up bric a brac, toys and books to be sold at a Christmas Fayre, then please hang on to them for a little bit longer. ECG Conference, Llandudno, Easter 2010 - April 6th - 11th

We already have a good group showing positive interest, and now is the time to think about going, if your name's not on the list already!
